You clean it every day. So why does it still smell?
Nobody talks about it, but everyone with a retainer knows the moment: you pick it up at bedtime and there's that smell, and that cloudy film that keeps coming back no matter how many tablets you dissolve. It isn't a hygiene failure. It's a plastic problem.
1. The bedtime moment
Invisalign runs about $5,245 on average in the U.S., and the Vivera retainer that keeps the result costs $87–150 per arch. Then you hold your breath putting it in. When UCL researchers swabbed retainers, they found Candida on two out of three, living in a biofilm the authors called "very difficult to remove."
2. Tablets that don't finish the job
Effervescent tablets freshen the surface, then the smell comes back in days, because fizz has no mechanical force against hardened buildup. Meanwhile the cost quietly stacks up: about $73 a year in Retainer Brite, up to $365 a year in Invisalign Cleaning Crystals, and the $100 pod ships you a "free" box of tablets, then bills you for them forever.
3. Brushing makes it worse
Toothpaste is abrasive. Every scrub leaves micro-scratches in the soft plastic, and every scratch is a new hiding place for the film and the smell. The harder you brush, the hazier it gets and the faster it returns. Eight years of toothpaste is how a retainer ends up "fogged."
"You're not supposed to brush your aligners with a toothbrush and toothpaste because that can lead to a hazy look on the aligner AND create tiny little abrasions where bacteria can grow."
— Public review of a cleaning-tablet product on Amazon.com, whose author adds that her orthodontist's only advice was to "rinse them under cold water." Quoted as a published customer review, not a PurePod™ testimonial.
Rinsing doesn't reach it. Brushing scratches it in. Tablets perfume it. That's why it always comes back.

It's not you. It's the plastic.
Thermoformed retainer plastic is micro-porous: covered in pores and scratches too small to see, big enough for film to settle in. Rinsing doesn't reach inside them. Toothpaste adds new ones. Tablets fizz on the surface and leave the hardened buildup where it is. That's why the smell always comes back, whatever you were told at the orthodontist's.
Dental labs and jewelers solved this in the 1950s with ultrasonic baths. It's the machine your orthodontist uses to clean your appliance in five minutes before handing it back with… a box of tablets.
PurePod™ puts that machine on your bathroom counter.
48,000 scrubbing bubbles a second. A car wash for your retainer.
Dental labs and jewelers have cleaned with ultrasound since the 1950s. Drop your appliance in tap water, press one button, and cavitation does what a brush can't: it reaches into the grooves and micro-scratches without touching the plastic. Tablets freshen. Ultrasound removes.
48K Cavitation
Transducers at 48,000 Hz create microscopic bubbles that implode against every surface of the appliance. Higher frequency means finer bubbles than the 42 kHz pods most brands sell, so the clean gets into the places a tablet skips. 5-minute quick or 10-minute deep mode.
Tap-Water Clean
It runs on plain water. No proprietary tablets, no "boosting" sachets, no auto-ship. If you like the mint, drop in a Retainer Brite or an Efferdent, and you'll use a fraction of what you use now. Optional, never required.
Separate UV cycle
A 10-minute UV cycle you run after the wash, lid closed, from the same pod. Not sold as a separate case. We sell it as a freshness cycle and nothing more: no antimicrobial claims, because we haven't tested any and we won't pretend.
Ultrasonic cleaning: first U.S. patent 1954, adopted by jewelers, optical and dental labs through the 1950s–60s. A 2011 clinical study on dentures found ultrasonic cleaning and effervescent tablets both "superior" to brushing with water (Cruz et al., J Appl Oral Sci). Category evidence, not a test of this product.
Everything the $100 pod does, plus UV, for $79.99
The leading brand proved ultrasonic cleaning works. Then it priced the pod at $99.99, left the UV out, and built a tablet subscription on top. Compare like for like:

Built for the shelf it lives on
A retainer cleaner lives on your bathroom counter, in plain sight, in the wettest room of the house. So it's built like it: a stainless-steel tank that won't rust the way cheap pods do, an IPX7-rated body you rinse under the tap, and a footprint about 3.5 inches across, smaller than a coffee mug.
Shown here in white, dusty pink and matte black. It sits on the shelf like it belongs there, not like a gadget you hide in a drawer. And if anything fails within 12 months, we replace it.
Quiet, sealed, small, and made to stay out.

The 5-minute habit you'll actually keep
Fill with tap water, drop your retainer in, press the button, get in the shower. By the time you're out, it's done: no soaking, no scrubbing, no dosing anything. Under 45 dB means it won't wake the house at 6 a.m.
It takes everything that fits the 200 ml tank: retainers, aligners, night guards, dentures, toothbrush heads, even rings and glasses. Two or three appliances at once, so your daughter's retainer and your night guard go in together.
Drop it in. Press once. Done.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I clean in it?
Anything that fits the 200 ml stainless tank: retainers (Vivera, Essix, Hawley), clear aligners, night guards, sports mouthguards, partial and full dentures, toothbrush heads, plus rings, earrings and glasses. Two or three appliances fit at once. Invisalign and Vivera are trademarks of Align Technology; we're not affiliated.
Will ultrasonic cleaning damage my retainer or night guard?
It's the opposite of brushing. Cavitation cleans with microscopic bubbles instead of friction, so there's no scrubbing and no new micro-scratches. It's the same method dental labs use on the appliances they make. Use lukewarm water, not hot. For appliances with loose or repaired parts, check with your dentist first.
Does it work on a Hawley retainer with the metal wire?
Yes. Metal and acrylic are what ultrasonic baths were built for; jewelers have cleaned rings in them for 70 years. Rinse and dry the retainer after the cycle so the wire isn't left wet.
Do I need cleaning tablets with it?
No. PurePod™ runs on plain tap water, and that's how most people use it daily. If you like the minty finish, drop in a Retainer Brite, an Efferdent or whatever you already own; you'll use a fraction of what you use now. We don't sell proprietary tablets and we'll never put you on a subscription for them.
What does the UV cycle do, and is it safe?
It's a separate 10-minute cycle you run after the wash with the lid closed. We sell it as a freshness cycle and make no antimicrobial claims for it: we haven't tested any, so we don't make them. For safety, keep the lid closed while it runs and never look directly at the UV light.
Will it get rid of old stains and yellowing?
Honestly, maybe not. Hardened buildup and yellowing that's been there for years may need a dental professional first. What PurePod™ does well is daily upkeep: it removes the fresh film and the smell, and it keeps a clean appliance clean. If you want a before-and-after on a three-year-old night guard, we'd rather tell you now than have you find out in a review.
How loud is it? Can I run it at 6 a.m.?
Under 45 dB: a low hum rather than a buzz, quieter than a normal conversation. Run it in the bathroom while you shower and a sleeping partner won't know.
Why not the $100 Zima pod, or a $33 pod from Amazon?
The $100 pod runs at 42 kHz, has no UV, and is built around proprietary tablets on subscription (prices and specs per zimadental.com, Oct 2026). The $33 pods have the specs on paper but no brand behind them, no warranty process, and "stopped working" at the top of the one-star reviews. PurePod™ sits in between on purpose: 48 kHz, UV included, tap water, a 12-month warranty and a U.S. support inbox that answers.
What if it stops working, or I just don't like it?
Two safety nets. 30-day money-back guarantee: use it daily for a month and send it back for a full refund if you're not converted. 12-month warranty: if anything fails, including the tank seal or the UV, we replace it.
