Does this sound familiar?

71 million American homes have a dog. Most of them never get a complaint. But once the barking starts costing you something (a neighbor, a client, a lease), it stops being a quirk and becomes a countdown. Here's how it usually goes:

A note about barking taped to a townhouse door

The note on the door

First a look over the fence. Then a note. Then an email from the HOA or the property manager, and somewhere after that, animal control. Fewer than 1 in 10 rentals accept pets without restrictions, so a barking complaint isn't just awkward. It's your housing.

The client call

35% of American workers do some or all of their work from home. The dog doesn't know that. FedEx at 9:02, the dog next door at 9:03, and you're on mute apologizing again. In one survey, 58% of remote workers said a pet interrupts their workday.

A drawer full of bark gadgets that didn't work

The drawer of things that didn't work

The ultrasonic box he ignored. The citronella collar he emptied in a minute. The $40 "shock collar" you couldn't bring yourself to use. The cheap no-shock one that beeped every time he sneezed. Each one punished something. None of them warned him.

Your dog isn't ignoring you. Nobody ever warned him.

The knock on the door is on a timer

Barking rules in most U.S. cities aren't about one bark. They're about minutes. In New York City, more than 10 minutes of barking during the day, or more than 5 minutes between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., is a noise violation: $70 the first time, up to $525 if it goes unanswered. Atlanta cut its limit from 20 minutes to 10 in 2022, with fines from $150 up to $1,000, and one neighbor with a video can be enough. In Phoenix it can be charged as a misdemeanor.

And most of it happens while you're out, on a call, or asleep, which is how you end up hearing about it from someone else.

Rules vary by city and HOA: check yours. Then give your dog a warning before someone gives you one.

We had two visits from Environmental Health about Mabel's barking. Tried a positive trainer (£320), an ultrasonic thing from Amazon, the lot. Five days with BarkSense and she barely barks at the postman anymore. No fear, no shock, no nonsense.

Two years of awkward side-eyes across the fence. Got the collar on a Friday, by the following weekend Bella was quiet all day while we were at work. Our neighbour actually knocked to ask what we'd done. Genuinely emotional writing this review, thank you.

Previous collar went off every time the labrador next door barked. It was useless and actually made Toby more anxious. The Voice-Lock thing genuinely works — he's worn BarkSense for three weeks and it's only triggered on his own voice. Night and day difference.

Needed something for off-lead recall as much as bark control on a farm. Bought BarkSense for the dual-mode. The 1 km remote works beautifully across my fields — Hugo comes back every time on the beep alone now. Battery is genuinely 30 days.

The auto bark-control side is brilliant — worked within a week for our Beagle's garden barking. The remote has more settings than I needed and it took me an afternoon with the guide to understand everything. Once set up it's great.

Your dog isn't ignoring you. Nobody ever warned him.

Think about what the usual fixes actually do. The ultrasonic box makes a noise he can't link to anything. The shock collar corrects him out of nowhere. The cheap no-shock collar goes off when he sneezes. None of them tell him "that's enough" before something happens. So he gets scared, or he tunes it out, or he learns to bark only when the collar is off.

Researchers have been finding the same thing for decades: in a small 1996 study, a bark collar that didn't shock worked about twice as often as one that did. In 2020, Petco pulled shock collars from its stores. The world is moving away from shock. So did we.

BarkSense gives him the one thing most collars skip: a fair warning.

The Warn-First Ladder™

A librarian doesn't throw you out. She says "shh," and almost everyone goes quiet at the first "shh." BarkSense works the same way: a clear warning first, a step up only if he keeps going, and nothing at all the moment he stops.

Step 1

🔔 The beep: the warning

A short tone he learns to recognize: "that's enough." This is where most of the training happens. Many owners find that, once the beep means something, the beep is all they ever use.

Step 2

〰️ A gentle vibration

Only if he keeps going. You start at the lowest of 100 vibration levels that gets his attention (a tap on the shoulder, not a jolt) and stay there as long as it works.

Step 3

📳 A firmer vibration

Only if he insists, and only up to the ceiling you choose. The moment he goes quiet, the ladder resets: no correction, just praise. Silence is what he's rewarded for.

No shock. Beep & vibration only. Every signal is one you'd be comfortable explaining to your neighbor, your vet, or your sister.

How BarkSense teaches calm, without fear, spray or shock

🔔 Beep + 100 vibration levels. Find the lowest level he notices and stay there. You set the ceiling.

📡 A remote that goes where you go. Couch, kitchen, backyard, trail. Rated by the manufacturer for long range in open terrain; walls and trees shorten it, and at home you'll never get near the limit.

💧 Water-resistant collar. Rain, wet grass and muddy paws are fine. The remote is splash-resistant: keep it out of the pool.

🔋 Rechargeable collar and remote. One cable, no batteries to buy.

🧡 Reflective orange strap, adjustable, easy to spot at dusk.

Warns first. Never shocks.

Questions dog owners ask us

Is BarkSense a shock collar?

No. The BarkSense we sell is a beep-and-vibration collar: it has no static or shock function, in any setting. Some collars that look similar online include a shock button; ours is the vibration-only version, and that's what you'll find in the box.

Will it scare or hurt my dog?

It's designed to do the opposite: warn before anything else happens. Start with the beep alone, then the lowest vibration level he notices, and praise him the moment he's quiet. Fit it right (two fingers under the strap), no more than 12 hours a day, and check his skin. If your dog is very fearful or noise-sensitive, ask your vet or a behaviorist before using any collar.

How fast will it work?

We won't promise a number of days. Some dogs connect the beep with "that's enough" within the first week; others take a few weeks; barking that comes from fear or distress needs a professional, not a collar. That's why you get 30 days to judge it at home.

My dog barks mostly when I leave. Will this fix it?

Probably not, and we'd rather tell you now. Barking, howling or chewing that starts when you leave is often separation anxiety, and correcting a distressed dog can make it worse. Talk to your vet or a certified behaviorist. BarkSense is for the doorbell bark, the delivery-truck bark, the dog-next-door bark: the moments you're there to give the warning and praise the quiet.

Why not the $40 one on Amazon?

Many of the best-selling remote collars have "shock collar" in their name, and some can shock in automatic mode. The cheap no-shock ones usually have no remote. BarkSense is beep and vibration only, with a remote, a warn-first routine you can follow from day one, a 30-day guarantee, a 12-month warranty and U.S. support.

Why not PetSafe, Dogtra or SportDOG?

They're established brands, and many dogs do fine with them. But their best-known bark collars are static correction at $85–110, with no remote (Dogtra's YS300 does start with a vibration, then moves to static). If you want the warning without the shock, and a remote for walks, BarkSense costs less and does exactly that. Prices as listed in October 2026.

Will it react to the neighbor's dog, the TV or a sneeze?

You hold the remote, so the warning happens when you decide, not when a microphone guesses. That's the whole point of a warning: he can only learn from a signal that arrives at the right moment.

What size of dog does it fit?

The strap is adjustable and fits most dogs from about 10 lb up. The contact points need to touch the skin, with two fingers' room under the strap; on a thick coat, work them through the fur to the skin. Not for puppies under 6 months.

Is it waterproof? What's the range?

The collar is water-resistant: rain, wet grass and muddy walks are fine; take it off for swimming. The remote is splash-resistant only. Range is rated by the manufacturer for open terrain; walls, trees and hills shorten it a lot, but in a house or yard you won't come close to the limit.

Are bark collars legal?

We haven't found any U.S. federal, state or city ban on beep or vibration collars. Your HOA or lease may have its own rules on pets, so check those. And only ever use it on your own dog.

How do I charge it?

Both the collar and the remote are rechargeable with the included cable from any standard USB wall adapter or laptop port. Charge both fully before the first use; battery life depends on how often you use the signals.

What if it doesn't work for my dog?

You're covered by the 30-Day Quiet Home Guarantee: if your home isn't quieter within 30 days of delivery, send it back for a full refund. Every BarkSense also has a 12-month warranty and U.S. support. Email support@jarretthome.com or call (607) 414-8659; there's also a contact form beside these questions.

Not sure it's right for your dog?

Tell us about him: breed, size, when he barks, what you've tried. We'll give you a straight answer, including when the honest answer is a trainer or a vet, not a collar.
